Jets… Giants… and the NFL Draft

The 2017 NFL draft is approaching this Thursday and this draft class is filled with star potential. From all-star defenders like Myles Garrett, Jamal Adams, Solomon Thomas, Marshon Lattimore, etc. To great players on offensive like Leonard Fournette, Deshaun Watson, Mitchell Trubisky, Christian McCaffery, etc. This year the Jets enter the draft with the 6th overall pick, and the Giants enter with the 23rd overall pick.

The Jets have the 6th pick and they have a ton of options and have a need for many positions. I think the Jets should go with the best player available instead of targeting one position. The Jets did this in 2015 when they drafted Leonard Williams, a defensive end out of USC. He was projected to go #1, but teams passed on him based on their teams biggest needs. This is what I think the Jets should do in future drafts including this one, since they have very little chance of even making the playoffs. With the 6th pick I hope the Jets get either of these players, Jamal Adams (S) out of LSU, Marshon Lattimore (CB) out of Ohio State, or Leonard Fournette (RB) out of LSU. This is a frustrating time to be a Jets fan because we need help at almost every position and the Jets have gone with a defender in the first every year since the 2009 draft when the Jets drafted… Mark Sanchez. But, I do not think it time to start focusing on offensive when this draft is filled with superstar defenders. Whoever the Jets draft at #6 will not help them immediately, but might help the teams record… I hope.

The New York Giants are a completely different story from the Jets. They have a team that functions well together and have good young pieces lead by a veteran quarterback in Eli Manning. With the 23rd pick in the draft the Giants are not going to get an immediate star like Myles Garrett or Jamal Adams, but they don’t need that. The Giants are a playoff team without a doubt. With Eli Manning still being able to perform at a high level and throwing to a dangerous receiving group of Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall, and Sterling Shepard, they do not need any more receivers. On defense, they could use a little more help. They already have Landon Collins (S) a nominee for DPOY, Eli Apple (CB), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (CB), Damon Harrison (DT) , etc. The Giants could use another defensive player at free safety, maybe cornerback to create a young duo with Eli Apple and receive veteran knowledge from Rodgers-Cromartie. I believe the biggest need for the Giants, and I think Giants fans will agree with me is, an offensive lineman. The Giants offensive line ran into some personal problems between each other, but they did protect Eli Manning enough for him to complete 63% of his passes and was pressure on only 19.6% of his drop backs. They could target players like Ryan Ramczyk (OT) out of Wisconsin, Cam Robinson (OT) out of Alabama, or Forrest Lamp (OG) out of Western Kentucky,. These are a few linemen the Giants might be able to get at pick 23. These linemen can help Eli stay in the pocket for longer and find his dangerous receivers down field.

Why not put this in ^

I don’t think either team has the ability to win a Super Bowl next season, especially the Jets. But, scouting the right players in the drafts is the perfect way of rebuilding your team or improving your team. To recap, the Jets needs improvement in every position and I think they should go with a defender because this draft is filled with high quality defenders. The Giants do not need to do anything crazy, they need to focus on one specific area like their offensive line and pick the best player that will fit into their system. I am excited for the NFL draft on Thursday.
