NBA Draft: Should The Celtics Pass On Lonzo Ball AND Markelle Fultz?

Yes, Yes they should.

Now let me make this clear before i assert my case, this proposal is NOT a knock on Lonzo or Markelle. Both are future stars for whoever decides to draft them. But, in the 2017 NBA Draft we have a very unique situation at the top of the order. The top seeded Boston Celtics own the top pick in the draft due to the Brooklyn Nets being stupid.

The Celtics have a LOADED back-court, consisting of Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley, Marcus Smart, and the young budding star Jaylen Brown. As a team, they were 2nd in the NBA in assists per game at 25.5, and had the 3rd best clip in AST/TO ratio at 1.920. They have efficient guards and were already a top 10 offense in the NBA.

However, the Celtics were 26th in rebounding, and 23rd in the NBA in points scored in the paint per game. They need a guy that can score all over the floor, they already have the perimeter covered.

Overall, i think Boston has two options they should explore instead of taking Fultz or Ball.

Josh Jackson would be the perfect fit into the Boston Celtics, who struggle for small forward depth. Aside from Jae Crowder, they have no other true small forwards. Josh Jackson averaged 16.3 PPG, 7.4 REB, 3.0 AST, 1.7 STL, and 1.1 BLK during his short tenure in Lawrence. He is the type of player that could fill big voids for Boston quickly, rebounding, scoring in the paint, a versatile defender, and a SF that can protect the rim. On Boston, Jackson wouldn’t have to shoot from outside, which is his biggest weakness, everyone else in that lineup can shoot. All he would have to do offensively is shoot 2’s. At Kansas, Jackson shot 55% from inside the arch.

If you do not believe me, watch his clip against Texas Tech, the link is at the bottom of the article. (Via Frankie Vision on YouTube)

Another realistic option Boston could use is to trade this pick. Let’s be serious, if there was ever a time to get Jimmy Butler without giving up the house, Its NOW. Chicago’s back-court got exposed after Rondo got hurt. After Rondo, the rest of the guard crop in Chicago belongs in the damn D-League (or G-league, whatever they’re calling it now). The Bulls were 25th in the league in scoring, 29th in the league in 3’s, and 30th in effective FG percentage!! Boston has quite the pitch to get the super-star they need to oust LeBron.

Boston could very well take Fultz and be fine with that, he is VERY talented. But with this teams makeup, and the fact that they are already competing, now is the time to go for LeBron’s jugular.

I would like to see the Celtics actually take Markelle and then turn around and trade some of the back court we have. I’m still not sold on IT as the every day guard. Loved everything he did this year but he is still a liability on defensive end (worst defender in the NBA if you ask me). You could add serious “paint guys” or acquire picks with trading Smart or IT (yes I like Bradley) plus don’t forget we still have Brooklyn’s pick in 2018 which could and should be a lottery pick (again)
