Yesterday the Celtics landed Utah forward Gordon Hayward, signing him to a 4 year $128M max contract. The dominoes are falling now, it looks like Boston will have to unload pieces to make room for Hayward.
This morning it was reported by Woj that Boston will be looking at a possible Marc Gasol trade throughout the season. Remember, not too long ago Boston was in talks about acquiring Knicks forward Kristaps Porzingis. NOW is the time to make these trades if you are Danny Ainge.
Imagine these lineups:
G Thomas G Bradley F Hayward F Horford F Porzingis
G Thomas G Bradley F Hayward F Horford C Gasol
Including Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Terry Rozier and other possible acquisitions to support the bench. If this happened, Boston’s depth this past season would certainly take a hit. In my mind, if I am Danny Ainge, this is a trade I would propose to both teams:
TRADE: Marcus Smart, Jae Crowder, Nets 2018 pick.
RECEIVE: Kristaps Porzingis, future 2nd rounder
TRADE: Marcus Smart, Jae Crowder, Nets 2018 pick
RECEIVE: Marc Gasol, future 2nd rounder
Who says no? If you want to receive a player like Porzingis, or Gasol, the Nets pick will have to go. Honestly, I think it would be shameful if Danny Ainge were to reject a trade like that. That lineup can shoot, defend, pass, is full of unselfish players, and they’re coached by Brad Stevens.
With just Hayward as an acquisition, there is no question the Cavaliers are still a far superior team to Boston. Hayward averaged 21.9 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 3.5 APG and shot 47% from the field. He is a star, Hayward alone is not pushing you ahead of LeBron and certainly not ahead of Golden State. Hayward with Porzingis or Gasol together? I think that could beat Cleveland in 7 games, not definitely, but it would be very possible.
