Preview of the 2017-18 Patriots

NFL: Preseason-New England Patriots at Carolina Panthers

Coming off the greatest comeback of all time the New England Patriots have rebuilt and rearmed their whole team, especially the defense.

On the first day of free agency the Patriots went out and gave Stephon Gilmore one of the most expensive contracts for a cornerback. This only adds to the already great corner crew that they have built up. Now they have two top corners in Malcom Butler and Gilmore. They also have depth in this position with Eric Rowe who ended up playing extremely well last year and Cyrus Jones. Now Jones was not that good last year on defense or on special teams, but hopefully he can pick it up this year and actually contribute.

The Patriots also added some more pieces to the defensive line and their linebacker core. They added Kony Ealy who had a decent year, but is most well known for his performance in Super Bowl L when he managed to disrupt the backfield multiple times. This was a great addition for them as it brings some much needed help to their pass rush. They also added veteran Lawrence Guy and David Harris. We shouldn’t expect much from Guy, but he could be a big help in stopping the run. Harris used to face the Patriots every year, twice because he was on the Jets. He was a pretty good player in his prime and brings some much needed depth to the position. More importantly the Patriots were able to resign Alan Branch and Dont’a Hightower. They both were huge factors in the success of the defense. Branch is the one who took over for Wilfork when he departed New England.

On the offensive side of the ball they were able to keep most of their guys but added Brandon Cooks from the Saints. He could be a big part to this new offense as he has speed that nobody can match. Martellus Bennett did leave to go play in Green Bay but Bill Bellichick got a back up for Gronk in case of an injury. They signed Dwayne Allen and he has proven he can play from when he was on the Colts. He does get hurt occasionally but he does have some potential behind Gronk. Let’s not forget they have Tom Brady coming back for another year and after the performance he put up last year and showing no decline at all he should be thrilled to have all of these new and familiar weapons.

So this year, these Patriots are extremely good on paper and should make it to the Super Bowl yet again, baring any key injuries. This defense could be one of the best in the entire league. The offense though should be the best in the league. Now I don’t know if this team is better than the 16-0 team but they could definitely get to that mark. I feel like the defense is better than the 2007 defense but you can’t match Randy Moss to anybody on this team. You could say Gronk but he isn’t at Randy Moss level yet. So expect this team to do very well and maybe another Super Bowl for Tom Brady and the Patriots.
