Effort and Hustle: Eduardo Nunez

Being a Red Sox fan, I will be the first to say I wasn’t overly thrilled with the team only acquiring Eduardo Nunez at the trade deadline, in regards to hopefully “sparking” their lineup. Little did anyone know that as of now, Mr. Nunez has been on fire lately, and has indeed provided some much needed energy and drive into Red Sox nation.

Eduardo Nunez is not the flashy name such as a David Ortiz or Manny Ramirez that Boston fans have been so accustomed to seeing in the past.  He more than likely will not be the gold glove type fielder that is Dustin Pedroia either. So far, the one thing Nunez does not lack, and has gone quite a ways for his brief stay in Boston, is his effort and hustle.

ECU Recruiting is Bringing the Heat!

One thing Nunez does have in common with current and past Red Sox players, such as Hanley Ramirez and Manny Ramirez, is the inability to keep his helmet on. Further more, while many and most of the Red Sox fan base may not have been thrilled with the team acquiring another San Francisco Giants third baseman, Nunez is currently 11-22 (.500 BA) with 2 home runs, 4 doubles, and 9 RBI’s in the his first five games with Boston. He also has stated many times he will do whatever the team needs as far as fielding position and hitting in the lineup.

Who would have thought the Red Sox would essentially give Pablo Sandoval millions to just “go away” and acquire Eduardo Nunez from the same team Sandoval departed from. For now, Nunez is fitting right in, hustling out infield hits, and playing second base for the time being with Pedroia on the DL. Doing the little things in Nunez’s case is the reason he may become a fan favorite in Boston. Stealing bases, playing multiple positions, hitting in different spots in the order, running out infield hits, and just “hustling”.

I Love You, Christian Vazquez

The New York Yankees acquired big names in Sonny Gray and Todd Frazier. While the Tampa Bay Rays acquired a power bat in Lucas Duda. With these moves, as well as the Boston Red Sox acquiring Addison Reed and Nunez, the AL East will be a battle to the very end, and could even lead to some match ups in the postseason.
