Boston College Narrowly Escapes NIU in Season Opener

Boston – The Eagles made their season debut at Northern Illinois last night and were lucky to escape with a victory. BC got off to a slow start with freshmen quarterback Anthony Brown throwing an interception that led to 3 early points for NIU. It was a defensive battle for most of the first half until Boston College got a field goal and a quick touchdown from Anthony Brown to wide receiver Michael Walker to turn a 10-3 NIU lead to a 13-10 BC lead at halftime.

The Eagles further increased their lead to a 20-10 score with a quick touchdown pass to Ray Marten. The 17-0 BC run ended there when NIU came storming back with a touchdown and a field goal to make the game 20-20 in the fourth quarter. Both sides traded possessions for much of the 4th quarter, as neither could get a good scoring opportunity. With just over 5 minutes left in the game, it was up to redshirt freshmen quarterback Anthony Brown – who beat out projected starter Darius Wade in camp – to lead this Eagles team to a win. The drive produced kicker Colton Lichtenberg’s third field goal of the night to give Boston College a 23-20 lead. NIU gave a scare in the final minutes when they drove all the way into the BC red zone. The game was sealed when NIU kicker Christian Hagan missed a 34-yard field goal in the final seconds.

BC freshman Anthony Brown, who threw for 191 yards and two TDs, runs for a 9-yard gain, his longest of the night.
