Happy 8-year anniversary to Tom Brady! Today marks 8 years since Tom Brady absolutely destroyed the Tennessee Titans on a snowy Sunday in Foxboro. Many of you might recall that that was Brady’s “I’m Back” game after he missed the 2008 season due to injury. That was one of those games where you ask the people around you, “is this really happening? Are the Patriots going to score 100 today?”
Perhaps if they hadn’t taken Brady out in the third quarter, the New England Patriots would have scored 100. I knew long before the 2009 season that Tom Brady was the greatest football player in the history of humanity, but his performance that day may have been his best regular season game ever. Tom threw 6 touchdown passes total, including an NFL mark five in the second quarter alone. New England led by their biggest halftime lead in team history, 45-0, and went on to win 59-0, matching the largest margin of victory since the NFL-AFL merger in ‘70.
The best stat lines from that game were Randy Moss’s 10 catches for 129 yards and 3 TDs, Wes Welker’s 11 catches for 150 yards and 2 TD’s and obviously Brady’s 29 of 34 (more TDs than incompletions!) for 380 yards and 6 TDs. However, my favorite stat line of the game had to go to backup QB Brian Hoyer. Hoyer took over the game for Brady in the third quarter and went 9 for 11 for 52 yards passing the ball. That’s not the part I like, it’s his Jerome Bettis-like rushing stat line of 6 carries for -2 yards and a TD. His longest rush was 4 yards and he still ended up in the negative. Football is fun.
Not much has changed in 8 years other than the fact that Tom Brady is better than he was then and has more Championship hardware to show for it. TB12 is still the best QB in the NFL, he still gives his team the best chance to win, and he’s still a humble, articulate leader of men. I’m not ashamed to admit that if I were given the chance to come back to life as any other human, I would choose Tom Brady 10 out of 10 times.
My favorite play of the game was the flea flicker to Randy Moss. Brady and Moss just a couple of goats playing in the snow — fuckin’ adorable. The uniforms both Tennessee and New England were wearing were exquisite but what Brady did to the Titans defense is NOT SUITABLE FOR WORK.
