The long-awaited Super Bowl rematch finally came on Sunday Night Football. It was undoubtedly a huge test to see where this Patriots team stands against good teams, and they didn’t disappoint, winning 23-7.
The Patriots defense has been a weak link so far this season, but this game proved that they have figured things out. The defense only allowed 232 yards passing to a high powered offense that includes Matt Ryan and Julio Jones.
The defense came up huge tonight with two 4th down stops, including one inside the 5-yard line and a blocked field goal. They dominated the Falcons offense in a great outing that proved Matt Patricia has these boys rolling again.
The Patriots offense continued their great play tonight, especially (and obviously) Tom Brady. Tom Brady finished with 249 yards on 21-29 and 2 touchdowns to no interceptions. The Patriots run game was led by Dion Lewis, who finished with 76 yards on the ground. The run game also saw contributions from Burkhead, Gillislee, White and even Brady. Chris Hogan led the receivers with 71 yards receiver but the receiving touchdowns came from Brandon Cooks and James White.
After the Patriots season got off to a slow start, many were questioning whether this team was even good enough to make another Super Bowl run, especially after that first outing against the Chiefs. I think everyone who questioned them now has their answer after this performance against another good team.
This Patriots team is back to being real contenders for the Super Bowl. It’s still fairly early in the season, but it seems as if the defense is finally clicking and the offense continues to perform. It’ll be tough to bring the Patriots down with all that going for them.
