According to inside sources, Rob Gronkowski will be coming back to play with the Patriots in the 2018-19 season. Despite reports of Gronkowski leaving the team to pursue a career in the WWE or the film industry, sources have confirmed the All-Pro tight end will stay with the team, at least one more season.
After the Super Bowl Loss, Gronkowski told reporters he needed time to “Sit down and reflect” on his future which could include a possible retirement from football. Only few days later, reports came out that Sylvester Stallone and former football standout at the University of Miami Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson were “in Gronkowski’s ear” about switching to the film industry. An appearance from Gronkowski during WWE’s Wrestlemania event last year left even more questions about the tight end leaving to go into the entertainment business.
While Rob Gronkowski’s full future is up in the air, one thing for certain is he will be in a Patriots uniform next season. There was truth to the reports, and Gronkowski still is considering going into the entertainment business post-football career, but his focus right now remains on the Patriots.
There have been reports that Vince McMahon and the WWE would be willing to offer a Gronkowski similar to the one that swayed former UFC superstar Ronda Rousey to the wresting entertainment business. With reports on Gronkowski considering retirement, the WWE was all-in on attempting to sign the super-star.
Despite being back in New England next year, Gronkowski will continue to work with his sponsors and make his usual guest appearances. The seven-year veteran has already been used in advertisements with companies such as Nike, Dunkin Donuts and Monster Energy.
There is no black or white answer as to why Gronkowski decided to comtemplate the film and entertainment business. There is truth to Gronkowski’s desire to be in the film industry one day, and there was a serious push by WWE to sign the star. However, this could also be used as a contract strategy to get the Patriots to stray away from the heavily incentive-based contract. Having guaranteed money from another industry could be used as leverage during contract negotiations between Gronkowski and New England.
Whether Gronk decides to call it quits the same time as Brady, or plays out the rest of his deal, one thing is for certain. Rob Gronkowski will be in a New England Patriots uniform for the 2018-19 season.
