Drew Pomeranz Leaves Spring Training Game Early

Red Sox left-hander Drew Pomeranz left Friday’s Spring Training game, against the Cardinals, with left forearm tightness. According to Michael Silverman, Pomeranz said that he is “pretty sure this is nothing” and his level of concern is “pretty low.” He will undergo further testing tomorrow, but says his departure from the game was “precautionary” and he “didn’t want to push it.” The pitch he threw directly before his removal seemed as normal as they come. Good delivery, good landing, and kept batters off balance throughout his day. He made no motion to his arm, didn’t yell out in pain, it was just…normal. That’s probably a decent sign he’ll be ok.

If it turns out to be a serious matter and costs Pomeranz to miss the start of the season or worse, I would expect the Red Sox to at least explore Lance Lynn and Alex Cobb as potential long-term fixes. Not gonna speculate on who Davey D would set his sights on, but he wouldn’t be doing his job if he didn’t explore them as possibilities.

If a short-term fix is needed, Triple A’ers Hector Velasquez & Roenis Elias are both being considered for the 5th spot in the rotation due to the void left by E-Rod & knuckleballer Steven Wright. Sale-Price-Porcello-Elias-Velasquez isn’t exactly the sexiest rotation, but given Boston’s early-season schedule, it isn’t the ugliest. They could definitely manage the first 25/30 games with those guys.

Pomeranz had a career year in 2017 posting a 17-6 record with a 3.32 ERA. At times, he was every bit as good as Chris Sale and provided the Red Sox a solid 1-2 pitching punch. Drew Pomeranz is a vital piece to the success of the team and the Sox staff will be very cautious with him. Pomeranz is fairly durable and very rarely misses any regular season playing time. The 2018 Boston Red Sox are counting on that.
