Red Sox: Weekend Update

It’s only Saturday, and the ballgame isn’t even over, but a lot has already happened this weekend…

Sale Exits Game

Chris Sale was struck by a line drive and left the game in the top of the 1st with a hip contusion. Track record against the Astros so far? Not great.

Sale is expected to be the Sox Opening Day pitcher on Thursday. He is currently being medically evaluated.

Christian Vazquez Signs Extension

Looks like Christian Vazquez will be one of those career one-team players. Already in his 11th season in the Red Sox organization, the catcher has signed a 3-year contract extension through 2021 with a club option for 2022.

According to, Vazquez has thrown out 42% of attempted base stealers in 211 games, the highest rate of any catcher since 1987. Offensively, Vazquez often comes through in the clutch. In a lackluster lineup last season, he batted .290. He’s had a strong spring training, and the club is clearly confident in him.

Deven Marrero to the Diamondbacks

The utility infielder is officially off the roster, as Arizona acquired him from Boston for cash or a player to be named later.

Marrero was expected to be one of Dustin Pedroia’s substitutes as the veteran player continues to recover from knee surgery. While he said that he “grew up in Boston” and “will always be a Red Sock,” he’s “excited to help the [Diamondbacks] win.”
