Nothing that Bill Belichick does should be a surprise. The list of starting players that he has traded is very long, but has he ever traded anyone with the skill and star power of Rob Gronkowski? You could argue Randy Moss, he was a first ballot Hall of Famer after all, but Moss basically shot his way out of town. It seems like, after a ridiculous press conference this past weekend, Gronk may be doing the same thing.
Gronk is arguably the greatest tight end in the history of the NFL. He is he biggest matchup problem for opposing defenses, and he is Tom Brady’s favorite target. But after signing a new 3 year deal last year, he seems unhappy about his contract again. All offseason it’s been one story after another, he was going to retire to join the WWE, or to become an actor, or now, to become a motocross star. It’s a little tired at this point, and now the fans have started to turn on him as well. I couldn’t have imagined the Patriots even considering trading Gronk last season, but now I’d totally understand the move.
So if you’re a Gronk lover, you may want to make your wishes and say your prayers, because I think there’s a very real possibility that he is traded this week. If a team decides to make a solid offer to Belichick while he’s in the draft room, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he took it. I don’t want it to happen, and I’m certainly not rooting for it, but I would understand why the move was made. We can discuss the merits of the player and his future, but putting yourself ahead of the team is something that is not allowed in Foxboro, and it may cost the Patriots one of their best players.
