Sorry NHL. You’re Not Getting the Stanley Cup Back.

If you’re waking up from a coma, living under a rock, or if you’re still in complete denial, this happened a few days ago.

Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in five games to win their first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history. After thirteen long years of heartbreaking collapses, the “Great 8” finally earned his Cup, further cementing his legacy as one of hockey’s greatest. Since raising Lord Stanley’s Cup on Thursday night, Ovechkin hasn’t stopped celebrating.

What better way to celebrate winning the Cup in Vegas than a night out in Vegas? Ovechkin has always struck me as a guy who loves to party, so dancing, drinking, and doing blow(?) at a luxurious nightclub seemed appropriate. Endless amounts of champagne were enjoyed out of the Cup that night.

From Vegas to D.C. and expensive champagne to cheap beer, Ovechkin’s bender was only beginning. The Capitals were honored by the home crowd at Nationals park, where Ovechkin threw out the first pitch and subsequently did keg (Cup?) stands. Ovi might not live to see next season, and he’s probably perfectly content with that. But wait, there’s more!

Just when you thought the bender couldn’t get more legendary, Ovechkin and a few of his teammates decided to cool off after a hot day at the ballpark. While any of us would surely be arrested for this type of conduct, this is a guy who brought a city its first Stanley Cup championship ever. He can basically do whatever he wants.

I’m convinced the NHL is never getting the Stanley Cup back from Ovechkin. My prayers go out to the poor soul who will inevitably be mauled when he tells Ovi to return the Cup. He loves that trophy so much and it hasn’t left his side since he first hoisted it in Vegas. In fact, he may or may not have had relations with the Cup last night.

All eyes will be on Alex Ovechkin at the Capitals’ championship parade on June 12, where he’ll more than likely continue this legendary bender in front of an energized crowd. His speech is going to be one for the ages.
