The Round of 16 game between Brazil and Mexico ended in a 2-0 victory for the Brazilian powerhouse. Even though it ended 2-0, the first half was completely neck and neck, ending with no goals for either side.
The game took a turn in the 51st minute when Willian and Neymar connected on a beautiful give and go where Willian took it to the left wing, sent in a low cross to Neymar where he was able to stab it in. Roberto Firmino came on in the last ten minutes and was able to make an impact on the game, scoring the second goal which was assisted from Neymar. The entire second half it seemed like Mexico was playing catch up, struggling to gain possession and create offensive opportunities.
Hirving Lozano and Carlos Vela were the only players that seemed to be creating offensive opportunities in the second half. Lozano, who has made a name for himself at this tournament, was the most dangerous player on the field for Mexico after Chicharito was taken off with an injury. Even tho Lozano and Vela were creating, no one was able to help them finish. After an impressive group stage round for Mexico, they were disappointing in their loss to Brazil.
Brazil looks to be the favorite to win the World Cup after their impressive victory today. Willian, who was very quiet in the first half, woke up in the second half and created many opportunities for his teammates, including his beautiful assist to Neymar, which was the turning point during the game. Brazil’s attack is dangerous, and teams like Mexico can only keep up for so long.
