It was recently reported that Jimmy Butler wants to eventually team up and play with Kyrie Irving. Butler is reported to be “fed up” with the attitude of the young players on the Wolves, specifically Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins. Earlier, the Wolves were ready to give Butler a max contract extension, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.
As everyone knows, Kyrie Irving is on the Celtics. However, this is his last year under contract until he has a player option to decide whether or not to stay for one more year. Jimmy Butler also has a player option after next season and it’s looking more and more likely that he will walk away from the Wolves. Now what does this mean for the Celtics?
The initial reaction would be “Jimmy Butler to the Celtics!”, but I wouldn’t count on that too much. In fact, it was reported that they want to play on the same Eastern Conference team, and there are 15 other teams in the East too. Yes, Butler is a very good player, but with Tatum, Brown, Rozier, Irving, and Horford all being free agents next summer, we should have higher priorities of making sure those guys stay rather than adding Butler. Brown and Tatum are still under rookie contracts and it’s the team’s option to keep them next summer, so it’s very likely they will come back for cheap money. Rozier is a little shaky on where he stands because a lot of teams could be willing to offer him more money than Boston will. Also, an aging Al Horford is really up in the air about his decision. That leaves us with Kyrie’s decision on whether or not to stay in Boston.
Out of those 5 guys, I would put re-signing everyone except Rozier ahead of signing Butler. This a young core that can be very special over the next few years, so why try to break them up? Adding Butler would be awesome yeah, but Brown and Tatum could very well be better than Butler ever will be.
Now say Kyrie and Butler are dead-set on teaming up with each other. They will have the option to go anywhere they want. Kyrie could leave the Celtics to team up with Butler, which is a very real possibility. There will always be rumors about where will Kyrie go next offseason, but if he wants to play with Butler as much as Butler wants to play with him, then next summer is going to be a stressful one. People are confident that he is going to re-sign with Boston, but you really never know with this guy. I hope Danny Ainge offers an extension next year and we don’t have to deal with the drama. Yes, Jimmy Butler is good, but is he good enough to change up the entire Celtics roster? I don’t believe so. That being said, we could have a very interesting off season next year that could leave Celtics fans upset.
