Report: Zach Britton is a New York Yankee

Brian Cashman has struck again.

Rather than upgrade their starting rotation, the New York Yankees have opted to strengthen an already elite bullpen by reportedly acquiring lefty reliever Zach Britton from the Baltimore Orioles. The O’s will receive prospects Dillon Tate, Josh Rogers, and Cody Carroll for Britton.

Although he has struggled with injuries over the past couple of years, Britton is still regarded as one of the best left-handed relievers in baseball. From 2014 through 2016, he was one of the games best closers, saving 120 games with a sub 2.00 ERA. His most dominant season came in 2016, when he received consideration for the AL Cy Young Award after saving 47 games in 47 opportunities with an ERA of just 0.54.

Britton will join Aroldis Chapman, Dellin Betances, David Robertson, and Chad Green to form arguably the best bullpen in baseball. He will fill an important role as the team’s lefty specialist (and more), where current lefty Chasen Shreve has struggled mightily.

With this five-headed monster, the Yankees may not need to acquire a starting pitcher ahead next week’s Trade Deadline, although Cashman probably still will. Regardless of what happens, this bullpen and the Bombers powerful offense should enable them to make another deep postseason run.
