Ty’s Top 50 NBA Players Countdown – #44

As the NBA off-season continues, all of the big news stories and free agency signings seem to be winding down. As someone who mostly writes about the NBA here at WTP, I need to find some way to get some content out. That brings us to what absolutely nobody asked for, but you’re getting it anyways! Welcome to Ty’s Top 50 NBA Players!

Every day for the next 50 days, I am going to be counting down a list of who I believe are the top 50 players in the NBA.

At #44, we have young big man Clint Capela. Honestly, I considered putting Capela where DeAndre Jordan was and Jordan here, but I am basing this list off of who will be better going into next season, and I believe that player is Capela. Capela is an up and coming big man after being drafted #25 overall by the Houston Rockets in 2014. Since then, Capela has been averaging 10.6 PPG and 8.1 RPG, all while blocking 1.4 shots per game.

Capela is a free agent this summer and still hasn’t signed with a team. Reports over the summer have come out saying that he thinks he deserves a $100 million contract. No team has offered him that yet, because although he had the best year of his career last season, he needs to show more consistency. Capela was a walking double-double last year, averaging 13.9 PPG and 10.8 RPG, which honestly is impressive considering he was maybe the fourth or fifth best scoring option on the Rockets. Out of the 10.8 RPG, 3.3 of those were offensive rebounds, which is huge.

Not only was Capela impressive on the offensive end, but his defense was incredible as well. Night after night, Capela would have to go up against some of the biggest and best bigs in the entire league, as well as protect the rim from slashing wings and guards. He averaged 1.9 BPG last year, which was third in the entire league.

Knock Capela all you want, but this guy is legit. Is he $100 million good yet? No, probably not, but his career is so young that I wouldn’t doubt if he one day earns that kind of payday. It is only a matter of time until a team offers a contract (most likely the Rockets) and Capela can prove his worth. I wouldn’t doubt if he bet on himself this year by signing a one year “prove it” deal and testing the market again next year. Either way, Capela will be a big problem for other teams over the next few years.
