Three Pitching Depth Moves That Make Sense For the Mets

The starting rotation for the Mets as of today is set. Jacob DeGrom and Noah Syndergaard up top, with Zach Wheeler, Steven Matz and Jason Vargas to follow. But they still want to have insurance policies waiting in the wings. The starting rotation options when it comes to depth left in the free agent pool is strong. Here are the names that would fit perfectly for the Mets.

A name that has been rumored to have the Mets interested is Josh Tomlin. Tomlin has spent his whole career with Cleveland. Throughout his career, he has never been a low ERA guy. He has a 4.77 ERA over an eight year span, with a career record of  61-53. His 2018 was one to forget, he finished with a 6.14 ERA, and just 46 strikeouts in 70.1 innings. He is a guy that comes with a lot of reliance on offense, but a cheap price tag, if the Mets do not want to break the bank and bring in a guy who may benefit as a bullpen piece as well, Tomlin is their guy.

A name that could spark Brodie Van Wagenen’s interest is Jason Hammel. Hammel is a guy who had a down year in 2018. Finishing with a 6.02 ERA and a 4-14 record. But that also includes the fact that he pitched for one of the worst teams in baseball, the Kansas City Royals. Just two seasons ago in 2016, he finished with a 15-10 record and a 3.38 ERA. He is a guy who can still be a solid piece if need be. He is also a guy who has spent a decent amount of time in the bullpen throughout his career as well. He is a guy who is capable of being a long reliever and filling in as a spot starter, or even a guy who could end up in the rotation full time. He has the potential, with a solid offense in his favor, to be a serviceable arm.

If the third name in this piece is not Bartolo Colon, I’m sure I will have my life threatened. Big Sexy was a fan favorite during his tenure in Queens, finishing with a 44-34 record and 3.90 ERA. He is a guy, that although the last few seasons was unable to produce, can. He is also a guy who can end up in the bullpen. We’ve seen he could do so throughout the 2015 playoffs, where he was utilized as a bullpen piece. Big Sexy coming back to New York would make a lot of Mets fans happy.

These are names that many people may not have necessarily thought of as options for the Mets. These are three guys who could be beneficial to both the bullpen and rotation if need be. If Brodie Van Wagenen is looking to make subtle depth moves, these are some names he might consider.
