On February 15th, 2019, the New York Yankees inked their ace to a 4 year 40 million dollar contract. Luis Severino was facing arbitration but no more, the 24 year old is a Yankee for the next 4 years. Last season Sevvy posted a 19-8 record with 220 strikeouts, 46 walks and finished with a 3.39 ERA. Severino made the all star team again and is going into the 2019 season as the #1 pitcher on the roster.
The first half of last season Severino looked to be a clear winner for the Cy Young award. At the all star break, Severino was 14-2 with a below 2.00 ERA and could not be stopped. Teams hated seeing Severino on the Yankee line-up to start games. Unfortunately, the end of the season was not so bright for Severino. During the back half of last season, Severino was 5-6 and his ERA rose over a 3. Many baseball analyst believe that Severino’s rookie woes came back to haunt him and he was tipping pitches again. Last off season, Red Sox legend Pedro Martinez came to Severino and helped him with his pitching style and it really did pay off. Severino didn’t end last season on a bad note, but it was not the season he was on pace for.
Luis Severino is showing more and more signs that he will one day take over this league. Being in the same division as Chris Sale, its going to be difficult but I believe the young pitcher has what it takes to take home a Cy Young trophy for himself and help the Yankees take home #28 in the near future.
