The Boston Bruins have found ways to win as of late and it hasn’t always been pretty but they have continued to win.
Last night the Bruins completed the sweep of the California road trip by defeating the Sharks in overtime 6-5. This was a fast paced and high scoring game. The Bruins exploded for 3 goals in the first period but gave one back with seconds to go. Later in the game, it felt that this was going to be another game that the B’s failed to protect a lead and lose points because of it but, Chris Wagner, which should’ve been a high stick, batted down a rebound and tied the game with just a minute remaining.
The star of the game, however, was the old man on the other side. Joe Thornton netted a hat trick against the B’s and still looked like a kid on Christmas celebrating on the bench. His celebration got cut short when the game went into overtime and the hero was yet again Charlie McAvoy.
McAvoy put in the overtime winner off of a feed from Krejci. The play looks almost effortless from McAvoy as he snipes it in. He was clearly one of the best players on the ice last night nearing 25 minutes of ice time while looking like the number 1 defenseman he is supposed to be. He has been a big factor in the B’s recent success as he is healthy and has been a solid partner next to Chara.
Rask has also been a part of the success as of late as it wasn’t a perfect effort from him last night but he still saved 33 shots. If he can keep the focus and effort going he could seriously be a cup winning goalie.
Now I’m not going to get ahead of myself here and call them a Stanley Cup contender because right now they really aren’t. They need that third line center and are in desperate need of a second line right wing. They have found a little help in Austin Cehlarik and last night in Karson Kuhlman but they need some consistency at that position to be taken serious as contenders.
The Bruin have won 6 straight and haven’t lost in regulation in a little while. This team is hot right now as they move on in their road trip.
