EPL: Two Final Matches with Major Implications

With just two games remaining, the English Premier League has soccer fans across the globe on the edge of their seats.

Manchester City and Liverpool continue to battle for first place and at the moment, just one point separates the two teams. With Manchester City’s tremendous performances against inner-city rival Manchester United and Burnley, they have taken full control of first place. They have now won twelve straight league games, outscoring opponents at an impressive rate of twenty-seven to three. They will face Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion in their two remaining matches. Likewise, Liverpool has been just as impressive as they have not lost in their last fifteen matches, outscoring their opponents thirty-five to ten. Liverpool, however, will face a much tougher final two opponents as they play against Newcastle and Wolves.

Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United all continue to battle for a top-four finish and a berth into next year’s Champions League. At the moment, Tottenham and Chelsea would be awarded berths, however, with two games remaining and only two points separating fourth and fifth place, it remains wide open. Tottenham will face Bournemouth and Everton in their final two games but will spend most of their time preparing for Tuesday’s fixture against Ajax in the Champions League Semi-Final. Chelsea will endure the toughest remaining schedule of these contenders as they face Watford and Leicester City. Arsenal, who have lost four out of their last five matches, will look to bounce back against Brighton & Hove Albion and Burnley. Last but not least, Manchester United, who have lost four out of their last seven matches, will look to stay in contention as they face Huddersfield and Cardiff. The champion of the Europa League will receive an automatic bid into next year’s Champions League and with both Arsenal and Chelsea advancing to the Semi-Finals, they will look to make a push and bring home the title.

On the other hand, just four teams remain in the relegation zone and two have already clinched spots forcing them to be relegated into England’s second division. At the moment, Huddersfield, Fulham, and Cardiff City will be relegated at the end of the season. However, with two games remaining, only four points separate Cardiff City and Brighton & Hove Albion. As you follow the final matches, have an understanding that Cardiff City and Brighton & Hove Albion are fighting to stay in the top division.

After the weekend’s results, Mohamed Salah has taken control as the league leader with twenty-one goals scored. His fellow teammate, Sadio Mane, along with Sergio Aguero, are tied for second with twenty goals scored. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane, and Raheem Sterling are in striking distance of the lead so be on the lookout as these game changers compete to earn The Golden Boot. Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Alisson, is the favorite to win The Golden Glove by recording twenty clean sheets. Manchester City’s goalkeeper, Ederson, has recorded eighteen clean sheets and will look to protect his goal and take home the league title.

As you can see, with just two games remaining, the English Premier League remains wide open keeping soccer fans across the globe on the edge of their seats. With first place, Champions League, and relegation hopes on the line, make sure you stay tuned for a compelling and action-packed finish.
