Early Friday Morning, News broke that current Los Angeles Angels First Baseman/ DH Luis Valbuena and former Major Leaguer Jose Castillo were killed in a car accident in Venezuela.
This is shocking and sad news, as Valbuena, who just turned 33 last week, was playing for the Angels less than 3 months ago.
The slugger made a name for himself with the Houston Astros in 2015, where he hit a career high 25 home runs and led the Astros to an ALDS appearance. Over his 11 year career, Valbuena would play for the Mariners, Indians, Cubs, Astros, and lastly the Angels, clubbing 114 home runs and having a .226 lifetime batting average.
Castillo hadn’t played in the majors since 2008, when he appeared in 127 games with the San Francisco Giants and the Astros. Castillo’s career spanned 5 seasons, playing primarily for the Pirates, before making pit stops in San Fran and Houston to finish. He was 38 years old.
Valbuena and Castillo join the likes of Yordano Ventura, Jose Fernandez, Oscar Taveras, and Andy Marte major leaguers gone too soon.
Well wishes go out to both of the men’s families during this trying time.
Rest in peace, Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo.
