Anthony Davis Would Cost Too Much

After the recent news that the Clippers were trading Blake Griffin to the Pistons in another blockbuster traded, it shed light on the reality of what Anthony Davis would cost the Celtics, making it not only almost impossible, but in a sense, not even worth it. Let’s take a look at the most recent blockbuster trades.

Just recently, Blake Griffin was dealt to the Pistons along with minor pieces Willie Reed and Brice Johnson. What did the Pistons give up? A lot more than they got in the fact that they sent Avery Bradley, Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic, plus a first and second-round draft pick.

In a similar blockbuster trade last year, Demarcus Cousins was dealt to the Pelicans along with Omri Casspi. However, the pelicans gave up a lot more than they received once again. The Pelicans gave up Buddy Heild, Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway plus a first and second round draft pick.

Can you see the trend with these blockbuster trades? The team receiving the superstar is giving up a lot more than they are getting in a sense.

What does this mean for the Celtics? Well, if you want Anthony Davis in a Celtics uniform, you have to be ready to give up a lot and part of the future. Clearly there are untouchables that would include Kyrie Irving, Hayward and possibly Horford. So without throwing any of those names in the trade, you are going to have to give up a lot. To put it into perspective, if the Celtics were to trade for Anthony Davis they would be giving up something along the lines of Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Semi Ojeleye plus a first round draft pick. To make it even more interesting, you could easily throw in Jayson Tatum in there besides Jaylen Brown. Now since I’ve told you that, I doubt any of you want to make this deal. It makes this deal nearly impossible and simply just not realistic for the Celtics.

The potential trades mentioned above involve valuable assets to the Celtics. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum are clearly the future of this organization. Both are extremely athletic, provide sparks and show flashes of potential greatness. Marcus Smart is huge energy source for this team and their lockdown defender, the same one who held Steph Curry to 9 points. Semi Ojeleye may not be getting that many minutes, but the rookie provides valuable minutes when he is in the game. These are all people I would be unwilling to give up, especially for just one guy.

The Celtics are doing just fine without adding another superstar like Anthony Davis, so I think it unwise for the Celtics to even consider it given what they would have to give up for it. Don’t try to fix something that isn’t broken.
