In a vote of their peers, Dwane Casey of the choking Toronto Raptors was voted coach of the year. It is truly stunning to every fan out there that Brad Stevens didn’t win this award. It is even more confusing and almost insulting that he didn’t even receive a vote for this award.
All 30 head coaches were polled to see who is the Coach of the Year and Casey was announced the winner early Wednesday morning. This coming 2 days after the Raptors were swept by Lebron and the Cavs. It is important to note that this is not the real award which is voted by the media and this is only voted on by other coaches.
Both coaches were looked at as the best coaches in the league but everyone thought that Brad had Casey beat out for the title. Now that Casey won, many are left wondering how he won this “award.”
Stevens has led this Celtics team loaded with injury back to the Eastern Conference Finals once again to face Lebron. Stevens coached a gem against one of the best up and coming teams in the 76ers as the Celts took them down in 5 games. What’s even more surprising to this whole thing is that 7 other coaches got votes and not Stevens.
Yes, Casey led his team to the first spot in the east but he had 2 Allstars playing the entire year. Nobody is really upset that Casey won but more the fact that Stevens didn’t get a single vote and seemed to be overlooked completely. Many are thinking that this is because maybe other coaches don’t like Stevens or that his relationship with other coaches isn’t the prettiest. Others believe that Stevens didn’t get any votes because of the success he’s had and that it could inspire jealousy. Stevens also managed to have Boston as the top-ranked defense in the league.
Casey though is also a very strong candidate for the award. The Raptors were the only team to rank in the top 5 for both offense and defense. Casey definitely deserved the award, but should it have been over Stevens?
The NBA’s Coach of the Year Award will be revealed on June 25th and Stevens is almost a given to win this award.
