Guard James Akinjo rushed up the court stopping as he passed half to dribble out some of the clock. When he picked back up, the leading scorer for the Georgetown Hoyas drove into the paint and put up a floater as an Illinois defender stepped in for an attempted charge. Instead, a blocking foul was called just as Akinjo’s shot found the net and once the free throw did the same the scoreboard now read a 84-80 in favor of the Hoyas with just 40 seconds remaining.
Coach Patrick Ewing should be happy with what he saw in an impressive 88-80 win over a good Illinois team on the road. This game came down to the wire and was something that kept all the fans in the stadium entertained.
Akinjo led the Hoyas in scoring with 19 points and he was followed by Josh LeBlanc with 14 and Matt McClung with 12.
Four of McClung’s points added to the appeal of this game from a fan perspective. He threw down a breathtaking dunk in the second half of a one point game and in the first half switched hands on a reverse layup. McClung was an internet sensation in high school
Illinois was lead by Ayo Dosunmu who had 25 points in the losing effort. The Illinois star was crucial in keeping with Georgetown throughout the game.
For the Fighting Illini, they will drop to 1-1 on the young season after the loss to now 3-0 Georgetown at home. As a team that as not expected to make much noise in the Big 10, they will look to be a team that can make a splash the rest of the season or play spoiler to some of the better teams in the conference.
