The Boston Celtics have been without a captain since Rajon Rondo was around in 2014. For five years, the Celtics have been playing without an official team captain. I think it’s time for that to change.
It’s time to talk about why Marcus Smart should be the next captain of the Boston Celtics. It goes without saying, but Marcus Smart is the heart and soul of the Celtics. No ifs, ands, or buts, Marcus Smart bleeds green and will do anything for his team.
He’s one of those players who’s stats don’t stand out every single night. He’s not the type of player that’ll give you 20 points every night. He’s not the guy to dish out 10 assists or grab double-digit rebounds each game. He does what he has to do each night to help his team win. He’s a hustle player who puts his body on the line each game, and most importantly, he makes game-winning plays.
He says it how it is and isn’t afraid to voice his opinion or point out who’s doing what wrong. Not only that, but he knows when to look himself in the mirror and admit when he does something wrong. He’s a winner and his job each game is to help his team win.
Marcus Smart is the longest-tenured Celtic on the roster. Now that Kyrie Irving and Al Horford are gone, there’s nobody that really deserves to be named captain over Marcus. Call me biased since I consider myself a member of the “Marcus Smart Fan Club,” but there’s nobody else on the roster I’d want as the captain other than Marcus.
There have been 18 players in Celtics’ franchise history who have been named the captain of the team. I think it’s finally time to name Marcus Smart the 19th.
