LOCKS OF THE WEEK
Last year, we started these suckers a little late and weren’t able to finish the season, but this year we’re in it for the long-haul. After going 4-0 (Matt) and 2-2 (Dom), now we’re committing to 16 weeks of pickin’ LOCKS for the boys. Get excited. This year, we’re also going to add in a consensus bonus pick, one that we both like. And make sure you listen each week—we give extra picks in the pod!
So far, we’re 8-6 on the year combined and with our bonus picks—not a bad start for guys who don’t know what they’re doing. Now, without further ado, here are our LOCKS OF THE WEEK for NFL Week 5.
Matt (3-2; overall, 7-2)
The Game: Philadelphia Eagles at Minnesota Vikings; Sunday, 1:00 pm
The Pick: PHI +3
First and foremost, the Vikings stink. They have 2 of the best wide receivers in the NFC North and a quarterback who can’t throw them the ball. Dalvin Cook has looked wonderful, but the Eagles have a good enough defense to contain any one-dimensional attack Minnesota throws at them. Plus, Philly is actually a good football team. Oh, and the line opened PHI +3 and hasn’t budged despite 60% of the public betting on them. Interesting. Philly’s winning this outright.
Dom (3-2; overall, 5-4)
The Game: Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs; Sunday, 1:00 pm
The Pick: HOU +4
We’re giving DeShaun Watson 4 points? This one opened at KC -8.5 and with almost 70% of the money going to Pat Mahomes and the gang, the line has moved all the way down to KC -4. Very, very strange indeed. Dom loves reverse line movement—we all do. Plus, Kansas City is banged up. They can be beaten. Looks like we could be in for a shootout, and this is great value for a game that could swing Houston’s way. Book it.
Rob (1-0-1; overall, 1-0-1)
The Game: Pittsburgh Steelers at Los Angeles Chargers; Sunday, 1:00 pm
The Pick: LAC -6.5
I know it’s a lot of points. It’s also in
San Diego Los Angeles, and we all know the home field advantage there isn’t particularly exciting. And the Chargers are 1-2 in their last 3 with their only win being a 30-10 one against the Dolphins. BUT—Pittsburgh can’t pull it together at all, and with their third-string quarterback set to strap up for this one, it’s really a QB vs. QB play here. Philip Rivers is a good quarterback, and the Chargers are due for a win. It might not be much of a statement, but they beat teams they should beat, and they should beat the Steelers.
The Game: Dallas Cowboys at New York Jets; Sunday, 4:25 pm
The Pick: NYJ +7
The world is on the Cowboys. The line opened at DAL -9, and it’s moved the other way toward the Jets. Why? Because Sam Darnold is playing this week, and while the Jets aren’t the NFL standard for excellence, they’re at least competent with Darnold at quarterback. It may even free up Le’Veon Bell to play like Le’Veon Bell. Something’s fishy with this line. Book it.
Every Sunday morning, I’ll be bringing you these picks, so make sure you place all your bets with the WTP Sports Book by DMing us at @WTP_SportsBook on Twitter. Go make some money, folks. And listen to the show on Wednesdays anywhere you can find podcasts!
