As several tournaments around the country kicked off, so did multiple upsets across the country. The past few days have yielded massive upsets early in the season and have been wildly entertaining games. Here is a recap of the best games from Thursday.
#16 Virginia Tech vs Ball State
Virginia Tech improved to 2-0 by beating Ball State 73-64 in the first game of the Charleston Classic on Thursday afternoon behind 21 points from Nickeil Alexander. The Hokies looked like the better team throughout the game and proved why they are one of the top teams in the country.
The highlight of the game came when Justin Robinson made a nearly half court shot at the end of the first half to make a statement and push the Hokies lead to 43-29 going into the locker room.
Tayler Persons led the Cardinals with 21 points in the loss. Ball State falls to 1-2 on the year.
#23 Purdue vs Appalachian St
Carsen Edwards is unreal. Edwards missed just one shot from inside the three point line and dropped 25 points in the Boilermakers 92-70 victory over Appalachian State.
Purdue’s phenomenal shooting didn’t stop at Edwards. Ryan Cline had 21 in the victory and the team shot 41.9% from three point land and 54.5% from the floor. Purdue led by 14 points at the half and continued to run away with the game during the second half.
Justin Forrest led the Mountaineers with 14 points in the losing effort as Appalachian State falls to 1-2 on the season.
#15 Syracuse vs UConn
The first major upset of the day saw Syracuse go down to a good UConn team led by new coach Dan Hurley as the Huskies won 83-76. Jalen Adams and Alterique Gilbert each had 16 points in the Huskies victory.
The win for the Huskies boosts their record to 3-0 on the year as they look to compete in a crowded AAC. The Huskies went on a 13-4 run late in the first quarter to gain a 6 point halftime lead. They outscored the Orange by three in the second half to seal the victory.
For Syracuse, they drop to 2-1 on the season and will almost surely experience a drop in ranking on Monday. Jalen Carey led the Orange in scoring with 26 points.
#13 Oregon vs Iowa
Unfortunately, Bol Bol’s 9 rebounds and Ehab Amin’s 25 points weren’t enough to push favored Oregon over Iowa in the 2k Empire Classic as they dropped their first game of the year 77-69. Jordon Bohannon led the Hawkeyes with 16 points in a spread out offensive attack.
Iowa’s defense was they key to the victory as Oregon was never really able to get anything going offensively. The Ducks were only able to muster up 28 points by halftime before coming alive a little bit too late in the second half.
Iowa improves to 3-0 on the season and drops a ranked Ducks team to 2-1.
#3 Gonzaga vs Texas A&M
This game was never in doubt. The Bulldogs smoked the Aggies in front of a rowdy home crowd by a score of 94-71. Everyone on Gonzaga was a contributor in the victory as it was a full team effort.
Usual scorer Josh Perkins was a facilitator instead on Thursday as he had six assists and only seven points in the win. Zach Norvell Jr took the scoring lead with 22 points. Gonzaga shot nearly 50% in the victory.
The Aggies drop to 1-2 on the year with the loss. Savion Flagg led Texan A&M with 18 points in an impressive personal performance despite the loss.
Penn State vs DePaul
In a crazy game, DePaul defeated Penn State in front of a nice crowd at home in overtime. They improve to 3-0 and remain afloat in a crowded Big East conference.
Max Strus led the Blue Demons with 21 points in a whopping 43 minutes. Jaylen Butz was huge in the victory as he hauled in 15 rebounds over Penn State.
For the Nittany Lions, they drop a winable game that they needed to win to be a consideration in the BIG 10 this season. Lamar Stevens was rolling the entire game as he had 25 points in the losing effort.
