Bruins Trounced in Game 1 and What Needs to Happen if They Want to Win Game 2

The Boston Bruins and the Toronto Maple Leafs squared off in game 1 of their playoff series and it was all Toronto.

The Bruins got on the board first with a Bergeron power play goal from Brad Marchand and it looked like the B’s were going to handle the Leafs again but with spotty defense they let The Leafs back into the game. The Maples Leafs speed and ability to fly the zone torched Boston all night as there were numerous times when the defense was chasing. This was a pathetic showing for the B’s in game one as nobody decided to show up except for Rask and even he got torched by Marner on his penalty shot.

It was one of the most disgusting performances I’ve seen from the B’s this year. They didn’t have their skating, passing or any of their “layers” on defense. They couldn’t control the puck while exiting the zone and when they did have possession their passes weren’t there. Chalk this one up as one of the worst games Pastrnak, Chara and McAvoy have played because when they needed them the most, they came up with nothing.

The only bright spot of the night in my opinion was Charlie Coyle. He had multiple chances on that third line but with Heinen crapping his pants and Johansson still trying to find his game, there was nothing going. The B’s should be fine they just have to clean up the defensive zone and cut down on the bad turnovers. Too many times you saw Chara struggling on the blue line trying to control a puck and then let the Leafs come 2-1 or 1-0 up the ice.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a little line shuffle for game 2. Maybe you see Backes in the lineup for Nordstrom who again was nonexistent. Maybe we see Kampfer enter the lineup but it’d be tough to take Clifton out right now. He’s played with energy, intensity and a purpose when he has the puck. He drew a penalty which resulted in the Bruins only goal.

All around it was a disappointing game for the Bruins who now trail 1-0 in the series and if they lose on Saturday they could be in trouble. To win on Saturday the B’s have to eliminate their careless turnovers and have to lock up on defense or else this series could quickly be slipping away from them.
