Every New York Mets fan should want them to go after Anthony Rendon and Gerrit Cole, but we have to be realistic. It is highly unlikely the Mets could land either of the coveted free agents. The Amazin’s have a few holes to fill this offseason, and these three players could help fill these holes.
Steve Cishek– The former Marlins closer has made a solid career for himself since leaving the closer role for good. After 2016 season, when he was still a closer for the Seattle Mariners, he has become one of the more consistent middle relievers in the league, which is something the Mets bullpen needs more than anything, consistency. The right handed pitcher had a 2.95 ERA in 2019, with 57 strikeouts in 64 innings. He could be a solid “bridge guy” who can come in and bridge the gap between the starters and the back end of the bullpen. Cishek is a guy who would not cost much, but can be a valuable piece to the Mets in 2020.
Jake Odorizzi- When fans see this name they’ll say “Well we should bring back Zack Wheeler”. Yes, they should. But IF they don’t Odorizzi could be a guy who replaces them. Odorizzi had a career year with the Twins this year, finishing with a 15-7 record, a 3.51 ERA (3.36 FIP), as well as 178 strikeouts over 159 innings, as well as being selected to his first all-star game in his career. Odorizzi would fit nice as the fourth or fifth starter in a rotation that already will feature Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Marcus Stroman. If the Mets can’t retain Wheeler, which to some insiders seem unlikely, Odorizzi could be his replacement.
Starling Marte- One thing the Mets have needed since they made the World Series in 2015 is a center fielder. Starling Marte has been one of the more consistent hitters over the last few years, hovering around the .275-.290 mark the last couple seasons. He can also run like the wind, stealing over 20 bases every season since 2013. He has also proven himself defensively as well, winning a Gold Glove twice in his career. In a perfect world, the Mets try to trade for Mookie Betts, but that is something that seems very far fetched. Starling Marte is a guy who could come in and contribute on a day to day basis.
This offseason should be an interesting one for the Mets. They fell short of the Wild Card by just three games, finishing with an 86-76 record. The New York Mets should be expected to play the market again, just like they did last season.
