WE GOT OURSELVES A TRADE! Bucks, Cavaliers, and Wizards in 3 Team Trade!

Who/What all is being traded

On Friday December 7th, the Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Washington Wizards finalized a three-team deal that meant many things. The Bucks are acquiring George Hill from the Cavaliers, the Cavaliers are receiving Matthew Dellavedova and John Henson from the Bucks, and the Wizards are receiving Sam Dekker from the Cavaliers and will receive Jason Smith from the Wizards in return. I know that all sounds like a lot, but here is what it means for each team.

What this means for the Bucks

Cap Flexibility

The Milwaukee Bucks are unloading a contract that, looking back on it, wasn’t great. They are getting rid of Dellavedova, who will be making $9.6M the next two seasons. If the Bucks don’t bring back George Hill they will free up $19M in cap space. The Bucks have some decisions to make this offseason. This move helps them to be more flexible with cap space so they can possibly bring back Khris Middleton, Eric Bledsoe, and Malcolm Brogdon. This move definitely shows they are trying to look forward to free agency. The reason for that is because they are moving John Henson. Henson—although out for a few months with a wrist injury—when coming back healthy around the playoffs, could add depth at the center position which they are already lacking. They currently have Brook Lopez and Thon Maker as the two centers on the roster that will contribute. Although head coach Mike Budenholzer’s offense thrives in a spacing scheme, the Bucks should definitely be looking to the buyout market or another trade to acquire some depth at the center spot to at least have someone who can protect the rim.

What does this mean for the Cavaliers?

Full Blown Tank Mode

The Cavaliers are taking on long-term “bad” contracts. In most cases, this means a team is prepared to eat the bad salary and lose games to acquire draft picks. The NBA hates this term, but we call it tanking. The Cavaliers are planning to be bad, VERY BAD. They are taking on Jason Smith from the Washington Wizards, and Dellavedova and Henson from the Bucks. A possibility that could arise is moving the newly extended PF Kevin Love. If the Cavaliers are trying to lose, Kevin Love will not help that. Love is a very productive 20-and-10 guy if he stays healthy. The problem with that is who is willing to pay a 34-year-old Kevin Love $30M? We will have to find out what the Cavaliers are trying to do for the future between now and the February 8th Trade Deadline.

What does this mean for the Wizards?

Honestly, your guess is as good as mine

Well, this is probably not the trade news you were hoping to see come out of Washington. Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld, a few weeks ago, did say that everyone on the roster was open to being moved. This does include Jason Smith. Wizards fans, I am sure, are going to miss his crazy dancing in pre-game warmups and player introductions. Oh, and the Wizards also got Sam Dekker… if anyone cared.
