A wild day of men’s basketball concluded as the final horn sounded in Tennessee’s victory over Georgia Tech. The Volunteers were supposed to beat an up-and-coming Georgia Tech team, and they did, making them a winner of Tuesday night’s college basketball games.
Here is a look at the other winners of Tuesday’s action.
The Tigers avoided a game that some could have seen them losing to a upstart Memphis team. LSU power forward and star freshman Naz Reid was in foul trouble late in the second half which caused others to step up. Skylar Mays led the Tigers in scoring with 19 points and Emmit Williams paired 10 rebounds with 11 points in the victory. LSU improves to 3-0 in their best win of the season.
The Hoyas went into Illinois on Tuesday night and came out with an 88-80 victory that was much closer than the score says. Up by just one point with 45 seconds left, James Akinjo hit a floater and the free throw that came off the foul he drew to put the road team up by 4. From there, the Hoyas defense stepped up and didn’t allow another point the rest of the game. All of the free throws Georgetown got the rest of the way were hit and they leave Illinois with a big road non conference victory.
Xavier has been a loser since they tipped off in the round of 32 against Florida State last year. The Musketeers went from a one seed in March Madness to unranked starting the year, and dropped a winnable game against Wisconsin at home on Tuesday. The Badgers as a whole didn’t play over-the-top well, but the Xavier defense couldn’t stop Wisconsin’s three big scorers. Ethan Happ, D’Mitrik Trice and Brad Davidson combined for 71 of Wisconsin’s 77 points in a 77-68 victory. The inability to stop even one of Wisconsin’s three scorers places the Musketeers as one of Tuesday’s losers.
The Bulldogs lost a close one to Temple on Tuesday by a score of 81-77. Tom Crean was unable to pull his team back from an early deficit that they got himself in against the Owls in what was a road game that would have looked nice on Georgia’s resume. As a team that is looking to make noise in a loaded SEC this was a game that Georgia needed to win.
